Cross My Heart Baby Blanket Crochet Tutorial

Cross My Heart Baby Blanket Crochet Tutorial

hello and welcome to Nana’s crafty home
my name is Tonya today’s tutorial is going to show you how to complete the
cross my heart baby blanket that you can find as a free pattern on my website
this baby blanket is so much fun to make it’s essentially a 1 row repeat it is
made as basically a giant square and very textured you can see here that the
blanket design as you’re going through this one row repeat essentially makes a
cross in the center of the blanket a maltese cross where it’s small and then
gets a larger as it goes up throughout the blanket so it’s very easy very
textured and really has a lovely design there are some other things about this
pattern that make it also a desirable blanket I am going to show you how to
carry your colors throughout the blanket so that you have fewer ends to weave in
at the end you will just be carrying your colors as we go throughout and I
will show you some techniques with that I also will be showing you how to
complete the simple picot crown that I used as an edging around the outside of
the blanket this picot stands up a little bit in the shape of a crown and I
think that this simple edging gives this classic and beautiful design just the
perfect finish the yarn that I used for this pattern is the baby be sweet
delight I have two colors I have a color a and the color a essentially is the
color that will make the cross in your blanket and so for today’s video I am
going to be using the sugarplum marled color and for the background of the
blanket I’m going to be using the flannel color kind of a light grey so
lavender and gray if you’re using the same yarn that I did you will need five
total balls I use three of color a for the cross and two for color B and if
you’re using different yarn each of these balls measures 377 yards so just
shy of 2,000 yards if you’re going to be using another yarn this is a light three
weight DK weight yarn if you’re wanting to find a substitute and have it look
similar to my blanket but I do believe this blanket would also look wonderful
in other size weights yarn so do what you love and what you want to work with
and you will also need to get started a size seven or a four point five
millimeter size crochet hook if you’re going to be using the same yarn that I
did this is the recommended hook size for the yarn that I’m using so if you
are using a different yarn make sure and use a comparable recommended size hook
for the yarn that you’re using in your pattern so let’s go ahead and get
started with color a on your hook for Row one I’m going to go ahead and chain
four so one two three and four I’m going to double crochet in that fourth chain
from the hook so the furthest chain from the hook go ahead and do a double
crochet work another double crochet in that same space and chain three so one
two and three we’re going to now work three double crochets in that same space one two three chain three one two and
three and I’m going to repeat that two more times so three double crochets in
that same space one two three chain three one two three and one more time
three double crochets one two three and chain three 1 2 and 3 then I’m going to
slip stitch into the top of that chain 3 those skip chains from the beginning of
this row and that is Row one completed so essentially you can see here we have
4 clusters of three double crochets with chain threes for my corner spaces and
this is the beginning of your square so for Row two go ahead and slip stitch
into that middle double crochet that next stitch in that cluster of three go
ahead and slip stitch chain three one two three that chain three is going to
count as my first stitch of my popcorn and I’m going to show you how to work a
popcorn here so a popcorn is going to be multiples of double crochets and then
you will take remove your hook insert your hook into the top of that first
double crochet or first stitch and then pull the loop through so this is my
first stitch of that popcorn go ahead and work three more
stitches so three double crochets in that same stitch one two and three go
ahead and remove your hook from that loop insert your hook into the top of
the first stitch which in this case is that chain three so the top of that
chain three insert your hook into that stitch then you will insert your hook
back into that loop that we dropped and then you will go you’re going to pull
that loop through the other loop which then puffs that stitch up you can see
here it pooch’s it out a little bit so now we’re going to begin switching
colors so I’m going to be pulling in color B in order to work with that
throughout the corner so in order to start working with that color B I’m
going to chain one now I’m going to begin carrying color a because I want to
be able to use that color a throughout the rest of my row so I’m going to be
working the rest of my stitches over top of that color a so after you’ve done
that chain one you’re going to skip the next stitch of that double crochet
cluster from the previous row and in the corner space working over that yarn
we’re going to work two double crochets three chains one two and three two more
double crochets in that same space working over that yarn one
and – I am NOT going to finish that double crochet because my I need to pull
in my working yarn that I’ve been carrying because I’m switching to back
to color a so drop color B bring up color a and finish your double crochet
now color a is your working yarn and you’re carrying color B so go ahead and
chain 1 skip the next stitch and you’re going to work a popcorn in that next
stitch which is that middle stitch from that double crochet cluster from the
previous row so that’s four double crochets one two three and four remove
your hook insert your hook into that first double crochet insert your hook
into that dropped loop and pull your loop through okay so my next popcorn has
been made now I’m going to be switching back to color B for my corner so drop
color a and pull up color B and do a chain one we’re going to skip the next
stitch and work our corner space two double crochet chain three two double
crochet in that same corner space working over the yarn that I’m carrying
so there’s one there’s two chain three and two double crochets in that same
space don’t finish that double crochet because we’re going to be pulling in
color a and finish that double crochet with color a and
chain one we’re gonna skip the next stitch work a popcorn in the next stitch
here so again that’s four double crochets in the same stitch there’s one
two three and four drop your loop insert your hook into that first double crochet
insert your hook into that drop loop and pull through my next popcorns made drop
color a and pull in color B with a chain one so chain one and as you are carrying
yarn dropping yarn pulling in yarn you’re gonna want to make sure that you
are keeping the right tension and not leaving gaps of yarn in the back of your
work because you’re going to want to have this be neat and tidy in the back
without yarn poking out so that you can see it so you’re going to want to just
double check and make sure as you’re carrying yarn particularly if you aren’t
used to doing that sometimes if if it’s a new technique for us we can kind of
get lost in working the stitches especially in a new design and we can
forget that we’re carrying yarn and we’re not keeping the right tension on
it or pulling it as we need to to pull a stitch together and we can leave gaps of
yarn in the back so just be mindful of that as you are pulling in yarn making
sure that things are nice and pulled not tightly but that they’re snug that our
stitches don’t gape open and that the yarn is is pulled in nicely so after
we’ve worked that chain one we’re going to skip the next stitch and we’re going
to work our corner space which is the double two double crochet chain
three two double crochet in that same space working over that yarn or carrying
one two double crochet chain three one two and three two double crochet in that
same corner space we are not going to finish that second double crochet
dropping color B and pulling in color a and this is what I mean by making sure
that we have things kind of nice and snug so I’ve pulled in that yarn and you
can see things are kind of wobbly Lucy I’m just gently pulling that yarn so
things kind of tidy back up a little bit and I make sure that when I am working
over this yarn things are just nice and snug to each other so I’m going to do a
chain one skip the next stitch and work my popcorn in that next stitch so four
double crochets one two three and for drop my drop my loop insert my
hook into that first double crochet insert my hook back into that dropped
loop and pull through drop color a pull in color B with a chain one snug things
up again skip the next stitch corner space two double crochet chain three one
two and three two double crochets in that same space don’t finish your second
double crochet pull in color a by dropping color B and I’ve reached the
end of this row so in order to complete the row I’m going to be skipping that
next stitch and I’m going to be attaching to the top of that popcorn I’m
going to chain one skip the next stitch and slip stitch to the top of that
popcorn stitch and now make sure because we’ve dropped color B here we want to
make sure that we’re pulling it up so that we can use it for the next round so
go ahead and make sure that you’re working that slip stitch over color B
and this is a good place to make sure that your yarn is not gaping you can see
here this is where I pulled up color B if I’m not careful this could end up
being a big loop and once I’ve started working with color B throughout that
next row if I haven’t snug this up nicely what’s going to end up happening
is I’m going to have that big loop sticking out on the back of my
so just go ahead and make sure that that’s nice and snug up against your
work as hidden as possible and we’re going to start Row 3 and Row 3 is our
repeat for the rest of the blanket until we get to our picot crown edging so
that’s how simple this is really just repeating the same row expanding out my
popcorns as we go okay so in order to start row three I’m working with color a
making sure that you are carrying your color B throughout you’re going to slip
stitch into that next chain one space on the other side of the popcorn so here’s
your popcorn here’s my chain one go ahead and work a slip stitch into that
space working over color B which I’m carrying and chain three one two and
three that’s going to count as the first stitch in my popcorn so I’m going to
complete my popcorn in that same chain one space by working three double
crochets in that same space so one two and three
remove your hook from the loop insert your hook into the top of that chain
three insert your hook back into that loop we dropped and pull it through now
I’m going to pull in color B by chaining one now we’re going to skip the next stitch
and we’re going to work double crochets in each stitch until our corner space so
when this Row is just going to be working a double crochet in one stitch
so skip the next stitch double crochet in the next working over color a in
corner spaces you’re going to repeat that two double crochet chain3 two
double crochet in the same space so one two chain three one two and three two
double crochets in the same space then you’re going to work a double crochet in
each stitch to the last stitch before the popcorn so in this situation I’m
working one double crochet in the next stitch working over color a do not
finish your double crochet because we’re going to be skipping that next stitch
and working a popcorn so pull in color a by finishing your double crochet and
chain one skip the next stitch and in this chain one space I’m going to work a
popcorn so in that next chain one space before that popcorn work a popcorn so
four double crochets one two three and four remove our hook insert our hook
into the first stitch insert our hook back into that loop and pull through
chain one skip our popcorn here and in the next
chain-1 space I’m going to work another popcorn so one two three four remove our
hook insert our hook into that first double crochet and pull through that
loop I’m going to be pulling in color B so drop color a and pull it in with a
chain one skip the next stitch work a double crochet in the next stitch I’m in
my corner space work two double crochets one two chain 3 1 2 & 3 2 double crochets in the
same space double crochet in the next stitch and don’t complete that double
crochet pull in color a and chain 1 skip the next stitch and work a popcorn in
that chain 1 space so 4 double crochets 1 2 3 & 4
drop your loop insert your hook into the first double crochet pull it your loop
through chain 1 skip your popcorn work another popcorn in the next chain 1
space 1 2 3 4 drop your loop insert your hook into the
first and pull through switch colors back to B by chaining one dropping color
a carrying that yarn throughout skip the next stitch double crochet in the next in your corner space 2 double crochets
one two chain 3 1 2 & 3 2 double crochets in the same space double
crochet in the next and we don’t want to complete that
double crochet because we’re gonna be pulling in color a finish your double
crochet chain one skip your next stitch popcorn in the chain one space one two
three four drop your hook insert your hook into that first double crochet and
pull through your loop chain one popcorn in the next chain one space one two
three four drop the loop insert your hook into the first and pull through
drop color a pull in color B with a chain one skip the next stitch double
crochet in the next in that corner space two double crochets one two chain three
one two three two double crochets in the same space double crochet in the next don’t finish
pull in color a chain one in our next chain one space work a popcorn so one two three four drop hook out insert our
hook pull through the loop chain one slip stitch into the top of the next
popcorn all right so let’s take a look at that so this is our one row repeat that we
just did so essentially what you’re doing throughout each round is you’re
increasing out your popcorn so look how pretty that is it’s already starting to
take shape and then let’s take a look at us carrying our yarn from the back here
so get that out of the way so you can see that that yarn carrying that I’m
doing is really not visible on the back of my blanket
I’m keeping things snugged up so that I’m not leaving yarn gaping out between
the stitches and it isn’t pulling my work or snugging it up but it’s just
keeping things nice and neat on the back of that blanket and it’s giving it the
easy no ends that I just love I’m able to change colors and I don’t have a ton
of colors to weave in at the end of my project so let’s go ahead and repeat row
3 again and you will get the gist of that repeat as we go throughout the
blanket okay so to repeat row 3 after I’ve done my slip stitch to the top
making sure that I’ve pulled up color B as I want to carry that until I need it
in this next row go ahead and slip stitch into that next chain one space
and chain three one two and three and work a popcorn in that finish my popcorn
in that same chain one space with three more double crochets drop my loop insert
my hook into the first and pull through my loop drop color a pull in color B
with a chain one skip the next stitch and work a double
crochet in each stitch until we get to the corner space so skip that stitch
double crochet in the next double crochet in the next and then in my
corner space two double crochets chain three one two and three and two double
crochets in that same space work a double crochet in each stitch until the
last stitch because we’re going to skip the last stitch before our chain one
space every round so double crochet in the next and double crochet in the next since we’re skipping that next stitch I
don’t want to complete my double crochet drop the yarn pull in color a finish
your double crochet and chain one skip that stitch work a popcorn in the next
chain one space here one two three and four drop your loop insert your hook pull the loop through chain one the next
chain one space work a popcorn one two three four drop your loop insert your hook pull the
loop through chain 1 in the next chain 1 space work another popcorn four double
crochets one two three four drop your loop insert your hook pull
through your loop now I finished my chain one spaces for my popcorn so I
know I’m going to be switching to color B so drop my color a pull in color B
with a chain one skip the next stitch working over color a double crochet in
each stitch to the corner so double crochet double crochet and in the corner
space two double crochets one two chain three one two and three and two double
crochets in that same space making sure things are snug back there double
crochet in each stitch to the last double crochet here so double crochet
double crochet don’t finish drop and pull in your kick working color a finish
your double crochet and chain one skip the next stitch work a popcorn in that
next chain one space one two three four
drop your loop and pull through your loop chain one popcorn in the next chain
one space one two three four chain one popcorn in the next chain-1
space I’m finished with the popcorns for that
section so pull in color B with a chain one skip the next stitch double crochet
in each stitch to the corner and in the corner work two double crochets chain
three and two double crochets double crochet in each stitch to the last
stitch don’t finish the last double crochet pull in color a by finishing and
chaining one skip the next stitch work a popcorn in the chain one space Shayne one popcorn in the next chain-1 chain one popcorn in the next chain-1 I finished the popcorn section pullin
color B with a chain one skip the next stitch double crochet in each stitch to
the corner and in the corner two double crochets chain three two double crochets double crochet in each stitch to the
last stitch don’t finish your last double crochet
pull in color a finish your double crochet and chain one skip the next
stitch work a popcorn in that next chain one space chain one popcorn in the next chain-1
space chain one I’m at the end of my row after
my chain one I’m going to slip stitch in the top of that first popcorn making
sure that I’m pulling in color B so I can carry it throughout that next round and there you have it so that is going
to be your repeat throughout the rest of your blanket until you get to the
desired size for your blanket using the amount of balls that I gave you yardage
wise at the beginning my blanket before the picot edging is approximately 35
inches square I’m going to go ahead and complete my blanket to that point and
when I come back I will show you how to complete that picot crown edging to
finish your beautiful cross blanket so once you’ve completed the blanket to the
size desired you’re going to go ahead and start the border in order to
complete that last row before you start your border you’re going to want to slip
stitch to the top of that popcorn and switch to color B with that slip stitch
so drop in color a go ahead and pull in color B and do that slip stitch to start
out that next round and you are not going to be carrying color a and for the
next two rows so you can go ahead and break your yarn at this point but now
we’ll go ahead and do the first round of the border and what we’re going to do is
we’re going to chain three so one two and three that’s going to count as my
first stitch and double crochet in that next chain one space and then double
crochet in each stitch to the corner so just a double crochet in every stitch once we’ve reached the corner we’re
going to do two double crochets chain three one two three into double crochets
in that same space and you’re going to do that in every corner space around go
ahead and do a double crochet in each stitch until we get to our popcorn
section of our blanket so I’ve done a double crochet in every stitch up to the
popcorn section of the blanket and in this section and in every popcorn
section you’re going to go ahead and do a double crochet and the chain one space
and a double crochet in the top of each popcorn so just work a double crochet in
each chain one and in the top of each popcorn stitch all the way through that
section and then as you go around the blanket you will just repeat that same
sequence by a double crochet in every double crochet stitch and a double
crochet in every chain one space and at the top of each popcorn stitch and in
every corner work two double crochets chain three and two double crochets and
we will move on to the next row of border so once you’ve reached the end of
that first round of border go ahead and slip stitch to the top of that first
chain three and then for the second row of border this is going to be very easy
just chain three and we’re going to double crochet in every stitch around
and in each corner you’re going to work two double crochets a chain three and
two double crochets so just continue on down the sides with a double crochet in
each stitch and then work your corner space repeat that around so once you’ve
finished round two of your edging your border go ahead and slip stitch into the
top of that chain three from the beginning of the row and you’re going to
switch colors back to color a with that slip stitch you’re going to drop color B
at this point we aren’t going to be using that for the rest of the blanket
so go ahead and break your yarn with that color so Row three is our picot
crown edge and to do that we’re simply going to chain one single crochet in the
same stitch single crochet in the next two stitches and then we’re going to
work our picot in the next stitch so go ahead and do a single crochet chain
three one two three slip stitch into the third chain from
the hook so slip stitch there I’m going to repeat that two more times so chain 3
1 2 3 slip stitch in the third chain from the hook and one more time chain 3
1 2 3 slip stitch in the third chain from the hook chain 1 and single crochet
in the same stitch that we started our picot then you’re going to single
crochet in the next three stitches so one
two-and three-and work a Pico in the next so single crochet chain three slip
stitch in the third chain from the hook chain 3 1 2 3 slip stitch in the third
chain from the hook chain 3 slip stitch in the third chain from the hook again
and chain 1 single crochet in that same stitch single crochet in the next 3 so 1
2 & 3 picot in the next single crochet chain 3 slip stitch in the third chain
from the hook chain 3 slip stitch in that third chain from the hook chain 3 slip stitch in that third chain chain 1
single crochet in the same stitch so how does that look here so basically what
you’re getting is a picot there’s three little pecos here all worked in the same
stitch and by doing that last chain one before you single crochet back into that
same stitch it causes that picot to stand up just a little bit making it
give giving it the appearance of like a crown so it just gives it a little bit
of a different appearance as we’re going around the edge so just continue that
same pattern doing three single crochets between each picot worker picot in the
next stitch with three chains slip stitch three chains slip stitch three chains slip stitch chain one in a
single crochet so continue on repeating that same pattern until we get to the
corner now depending on how many rows you have on your blanket you may need to
make some adjustments in your corner so I’m doing three single crochet stitches
in between each picot but here you can see at the corner I did my three did a
picot I only have one stitch left before I get to my corner that’s fine go ahead
and then in the corner we’re going to work a picot in that corner by doing a
single crochet and chaining three slip stitch into that third chain chain 3
slip stitch into that third chain chain 3 slip stitch into that third chain
chain one single crochet in that same space so I’m going to work a picot in
each corner space but I’m going to want my corners to look as close as possible
on each side of my picot so instead of doing three here I’m going to make it
even look the same as it does over here so I’m just going to do a single crochet
in that first stitch and then might work my picot in that next stitch and as I
said that may be different depending on how many rows you’ve done of your
blanket so just make adjustments as you need to
when you’re working those corner spaces so continue around your blanket with
this same pattern working a picot in each corner and when I come back I’m
going to show you my completed blanket all right so there you have it I’ve
completed the last round of border on the blanket by completing that picot
edging slip stitching to that first stitch and then weaving in all of my
ends this is a lovely blanket this is a free pattern written on my website so if
