Farm Family: Hidden Valley Farm and Woolen Mill

WE ARE A SHEEP FARM. THAT IS ONE ASPECT OF OUR BUSINESS. WE ARE CURRENTLY INVOLVED IN LAMBING. WE HAVE 160 EWS WHICH ARE THE MOMS TO BE GIVING BIRTH. A FORMER TEACHER… CAROL WAGNER’S WARDROBE ACTUALLY INSPIRED THEIR FARM. 05;47;07;29 CAROL WAGNER I GUESS MY INITIAL REASON FOR WANTING TO DO THIS IS BECAUSE I WANTED TO HAVE A SHEEP. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE A SHEEP, SHEAR IT, WASH THE WOOL, SPIN IT AND KNIT A SWEATER. SHE DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO DO ANY OF THAT… BUT HAS GREATLY EXPANDED HER RESUME. 05;47;42;22 CAROL WAGNER EXCEPT FOR SHEARING THE SHEEP, WE HAVE SOMEONE COME DO THAT FOR US, I HAVE LEARNED HOW TO DO ALL THOSE OTHER THINGS. AND I DID KNIT THE SWEATER. PAUL DIDN’T GET A SWEATER… MAINLY BECAUSE HE SAYS HE’S ALWAYS HOT… AND DIDN’T WANT SHEEP IN THE FIRST PLACE. 06;06;44;04 PAUL WAGNER I PREFERED PIGS BUT OBVIOUSLY I LOST MWELLS PAUL LOVES THE FLOCK THOUGH… AND THIS TIME OF YEAR… SPENDS LONG HOURS IN THE BARN HELPING TO DELIVER BABIES. 05;50;06;21 CAROL WAGNER WE HAVE A REGISTERED FLOCK OF COOPWORTH. DEVELOPED IN NEW ZEALAND IT IS AN AMAZING WOOL FOR HAND SPINNERS. SHEEP COME IN MANY COLORS AND BREEDS. 05;50;35;19 CAROL WAGNER YOU WOULD THINK THAT A SHEEP IS A SHEEP IS A SHEEP. BUT IT IS NOT. EVERY SHEEP HAS DIFFERENT KINDS OF WOOL. JUST LIKE EVERY PERSON HAS DIFFERNT KIND OF HAIR MWELLS SOFT WOOLS ARE USED FOR MAKING CLOTHING… CORSE, STRONG WOOL IS WOVEN INTO ITEMS LIKE RUGS. HIDDEN VALLEY’S WOOLEN MILL IS A NOD TO HISTORY. CAROL IS PASSIONATE ABOUT PRESERVING THE TRADE. 05;48;10;26 CAROL WAGNER IT IS A HISTORICAL ASPECT TO WHO WE ARE. THINKING ABOUT ALL THE WOMEN WHO SPUN BECAUSE THEY HAD TO. ITS HOW THEY MADE CLOTHING FOR THEIR FAMILY. YOU KNOW WHY PEOPLE ONLY HAD ONE PAIR OF CLOTHES. 05;45;23;24 CAROL WAGNER PEOPLE BRING THEIR WOOL TO US. JUST BEEN SHEARED. WE WASH IT AND CART IT FOR THEM TO MAKE IT INTO A USABLE PRODUCT. OUR MACHINES ARE 100 YEARS OLD. PAUL GREW UP ON THIS PROPERTY. HIS DAD BOUGHT THE FARM IN 1943… AND SOLD IT WHEN PAUL WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. YEAR’S LATER WHEN IT CAME BACK ON THE MARKET – PAUL DECIDED TO BUY HIS CHILDHOOD HOME. 05;46;46;15 CAROL WAGNER IT IS HARD WORK, BECAUSE THIS REALLY TRULY IS FARMING. THERE IS ALL THE STRESS THAT GOES ALONG WITH AGRICULTURE, MAKING SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH FEED FOR THE ANIMALS. THAT THE ANIMALS ARE HEALTHY. 05;48;46;04 CAROL WAGNER IT IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE PRESERVED BECAUSE IT IS PART OF WHO WE ARE THE FARM HOSTS AN ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE… BUT PAUL AND CAROL ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHARE THEIR AGRICULTURE STORY. 06;10;29;04 PAUL WAGNER IF SOMEBODY PULLS IN MY YARD RIGHT NOW I’LL SHOW THEM MY LAMBS AND TALK TO THEM. 06;09;28;22 PAUL WAGNER OPEN THE BARN UP AND TELL PEOPLE TO COME AND SEE IT. OUR NEIGHBORS LOVE US. THEY LOVE SEEING THESE BABIES RUNNING AROUND AND IT IS THE GREATEST PR WE COULD EVER POSSIBLY HAVE. MWELLS HIDDEN VALLEY FARM AND WOOLEN MILL IS LOCATED IN VALDERS.
