How to Care for Alpacas : Alpaca Food Supplements

Hi, I’m Jill Bergman and I’m going to talk
to you more about supplement feeding with Alpacas. In the winter, I showed you the supplements
that we give them that are made up at BYU, and then the alfalfa pellets and then the
cob, which is the corn, the oats and the barley mixed with molasses. I only give that to them
in the winter because they don’t need all of those supplements in the summer. I give
that to them; I give them a cup. Each Alpaca gets a cup every morning and they each have
their individual bowls, and I can tell how they’re feeling as to how they eat that supplement,
because they generally love it. It’s their treats and so, if they go after it and they
eat it up and they eat it up fast, I know those Alpacas feel pretty good that day. If
I have one that’s kind of nibbling on it or maybe not even eating it, it’s an indicator
to me that I need to be watching that Alpaca to see if that Alpaca is doing okay. In the
summer, the Alpacas don’t need quite as much supplementing because they’re on pastures,
and the pastures have fabulous nutrients for them, so in the summer I cut out the alfalfa
completely and I cut out the cob completely. All I do is give them this other supplement,
which is vitamins and minerals that have been put together down at BYU.
