StartSmart Birth Gift – Baudelaire Soaps & Impact Monadnock


I’m Joe I’ve been the CEO here at Baudelaire for 30 years. Small company, we’ve always understood that everybody that works here has got a family. A lot of times it’s a second job for their family when they’re working here so we try to do what we can to make their lives easier. We had done a study here in
the community about root causes, what are the root causes of poverty and some of the other challenges that we face as communities. And the thing that kept coming up, the most
effect interventions, are interventions that are very very early in life. And we came up with this idea of a birth gift. When one of your employees has a child you’re going to acknowledge that as an employer, you’re going to send them a gift. We thought if we built
a gift that was appropriate it would make life easier for other CEOs, they can buy that
gift, deliver it, and at the same time we can make that a brain development tool. So the gift is a set of 4 early-learning early-childhood board books, a set of cards that stimulate
dialogue between parent and child, and a receiving blanket that we use as wrapping paper. And then there’s a thin volume of parenting tips that just point to the importance of early
brain development. Reading to a child is, it’s a favorite activity. While that’s happening that child’s brain is learning how to process those words. What do those words mean? What is that word? How does that word relate to that picture in that book? In addition to every Start Smart gift that’s delivered a portion of the proceeds go to enroll a different
child, another child, in our community to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which
is a program which sends that child a book a month for the first 5 years of their life. Any CEO or HR person would rather give an age appropriate brain building gift but they don’t have time to run around and put that gift together. So that’s what we did for them. And they’ve not only acknowledged that employee but they’ve helped that employee’s family have a better chance for later success in life. There’s endless benefits to making your
employees feel like they’re part of a family.
